Keero – "Flowers"

Keero frowned as he stared at the cup.  This one wasn't right either.  He took a sip of the warm liquid within it.  No, it definitely wasn't right.  He hissed and his hand shook from frustration.  Gods above he wanted to chuck this stupid cup at the wall.  It was the cup's fault, he knew it was!

"Szaick," he grumbled instead, setting the teacup down on the counter gently.

Every time, every time he tried to brew this tea it never came out right.  What was he doing wrong?  He had brewed good tea a thousand times, with worse pots and leaves than these, in dirtier water than the water he was using, over dying camp fires and roaring kitchen fires, and all those times the tea tasted good, but never right.  Now that he was standing in a proper kitchen with pristine water and a roaring fire and what he thought was the right leaves, and yet this tea—this damn tea he had been trying for years to recreate—still came out wrong.

The shigen snatched up the flowers he had bought earlier.  He narrowed his dark sapphire eyes at the innocent colorful petals.  They were dark yellow, with browned tips and a warm yellow center.  He had been so careful about these flowers.  Everything about them seemed right.  They looked, smelled, and felt like the ones she used.  They were just like he remembered.  He could clearly see his mother reaching into one of the shelves and pulling out these flowers.  Maybe his memory was wrong?  No, that wasn't it.  These were the flowers.  These were the flowers that made the tea mother always brewed to make him feel better.  What was he doing wrong?  His fist unconsciously squeezed the flower stems tighter.  Soft and pained crunching noises came from the innocent flower.

"Keero?"  Jess appeared.

The shigen looked up from the flowers in his hand with a muted smile.

"Hey kid," he said softly.

"I'm not a kid."

"Would you rather me call you my boyfriend's kid?"  He smirked.

"No, that's worse."

"That's what I thought," laughed the shigen.  "Need something?"

"No…what are you doing?"  She crept forward to get a better look at the flowers he was crushing.

"Trying to make tea."

"By crushing flowers?"

"It's not coming out right," he said, frowning at the damn useless flowers.

The girl circled around Keero, took an empty teacup, poured herself a cup and took a sip.  Her multicolored eyes lit up and she smiled.

"What are you talking about?  This is delicious!"

The tea was delicious, Keero wouldn't have wasted good coin on bad flowers for tea.  And after how long he had lived with his mother he damn well knew how to brew good tea.  But just because it was delicious did not mean that it was what he wanted.

"But it's not right," he complained, setting the flowers down.

"You're obsessing over this.  The tea tastes fine," Jess waved a hand dismissively.

"Yeah maybe…"

Little did she know, Keero had been obsessing over this for years.  In spite of everything he had done since he left Merthina this felt like it was the most important, no matter how silly that thought was.  The shigen sighed toyed with one of the petals.  The girl was right, the tea tasted good.  Maybe he should just admit that he'll never be able to make tea like she did.  This was just one memory he could never remake.
Man guys, it's been one crazy weekend. Crazy fun, crazy hectic, and towards the end crazy stressful. But hey, I got some writing in and I feel better now. :}

Bet you kids never saw Keero as the type to enjoy tea, huh? There's a lot about my wonderful dragonboy you wouldn't expect. But I'm not going to tell you all that other stuff. ;P

Nmnyeh, this is kinda how I wanted it to come out, but I just wanted to get at least one prompt done to put me back in a writing mood.

Thanks :iconmistytang: for this prompt!
